Sale: Southernmost Murder (audiobook)

Tis the season of giving, and audiobooks.com is offering 50% off Southernmost Murder! Narrated by the wildly entertaining Wyatt Baker, this standalone mystery is packed full of humor, history, sex, and a killer who'll stop at nothing to recover a long-lost pirate treasure in Old Town, Key West.

Pick up this novel for $8.50 and meet Aubrey and Jun today!

Blurb: Aubrey Grant lives in the tropical paradise of Old Town, Key West, has a cute cottage, a sweet moped, and a great job managing the historical property of a former sea captain. With his soon-to-be-boyfriend, hotshot FBI agent Jun Tanaka, visiting for a little R&R, not even Aubrey's narcolepsy can put a damper on their vacation plans.

But a skeleton in a closet of the Smith Family Historical Home sure does throw a wrench into the works. Its identity drags Aubrey and Jun into a mystery with origins over a century in the past. They uncover a tale of long-lost treasure, the pirate king it belonged to, and a modern-day murderer who will stop at nothing to find the hidden riches. And if a killer on the loose isn’t enough to keep Aubrey out of the mess, it seems even the restless spirit of Captain Smith is warning him away.

The unlikely partnership of a historian and special agent may be exactly what it takes to crack this mystery wide-open and finally put an old Key West tragedy to rest. But while Aubrey tracks down the X that marks the spot, one wrong move could be his last.

Soundtrack: Ira Doye's playlist

In the Memento Mori series, I've written several instances of Doyle listening to music while working—be it sculpting or drawing—as it helps keep his restless energy focused and mind creative. Larkin has referred to Doyle's musical tastes as eclectic, but in reality, he's not a fan of much (if any) of it. No one will ever take Doyle's love of queercore, riot grrrl punk, grunge, and alt-metal/hip-hop away from him, but out of respect for Larkin's sensitivities to sound, he does wear headphones.

Here's a sample of what he might be listening to while in his office:

Bad Boyfriend - Pansy Division

No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys

He's My Thing - Babes in Toyland

Double Dare Ya - Bikini Kill

Smooch - God Is My Co-Pilot

Dumb - Nirvana

Bounce - System Of A Down

You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring

Sale: Color of You

Color of You is on sale, only at Kobo! Pick up Book Three of A Lancaster Story (can be read entirely as a standalone) for 50% off during December. You can also read in or listen with your Kobo+ subscription, with audio has been narrated by the wonderfully talented Greg Boudreaux.

Blurb: Bowen Merlin—yes, that’s his real name—accepts a position in the quaint town of Lancaster, New Hampshire, as the high school band director. He leaves New York City for the snowy countryside of New England just in time for the holidays. With class, homework, after-school activities, and a surprise Christmas concert to plan and rehearse, Bowen is plenty busy. And since he’s never had much luck with romance, factoring in time to find Mr. Right isn’t a priority.

Until he meets the proprietor of Snowy Ridge Apple Orchard, Felix Hansen. Suddenly, true love seems like a possibility for the first time in Bowen’s life. The two are a perfect match and fill the skipped beats of each other’s hearts. But as wonderful as Felix seems, he’s harboring old scars that could bring an end to their budding relationship after someone in town goes to great lengths to sabotage their careers.

If Bowen is to survive, he’ll need to lean on old friends and new, convince Felix he’s worth any hardship, and prove they can come out of the catastrophe stronger if they do so together.

Release: A Friend in the Glass

Today is the long-awaited release of the third mystery in the Auden & O'Callaghan series, co-written with Gregory Ashe: A Friend in the Glass! We are so, so excited to finally have a new Sam and Rufus novel out in the world and hope readers enjoy the latest death, danger, snark, grump, and romance that follows these two like a bad penny.

Blurb: It’s winter in New York City, and Rufus O’Callaghan is trying to make things work. He’s still got his job as a confidential informant, and he’s still got Sam Auden. The ex-Army drifter has moved in with Rufus, and the two men are trying to build a lasting relationship as Sam struggles to find his footing in the city.

When Sam gets a call from a woman offering to sell him information about Project Stonefish, though, neither man knows what to make of it. Sam still has questions about the training operation that caused him to leave the Army—and that ended in the death of someone Sam cared about. And Rufus is all too aware that when it comes to Stonefish, Sam’s judgment might be in question.

Everything changes when Sam and Rufus learn that the woman who called Sam has died from a suspicious overdose—and that, before she died, she contacted someone else about Stonefish. Someone who wants Stonefish to stay buried in the past. Someone with the power—and the ruthlessness—to make sure it stays buried. And to learn the truth about what happened all those years ago, Sam and Rufus will have to place themselves in the crosshairs.

Cover Reveal: A Friend in the Glass

This is not a drill! It's been three years in the making, but grumpy ex-Army wanderer Sam and snarky confidential informant Rufus—sleuths and boyfriends—are back!

Title: A Friend in the Glass
Series: An Auden & O'Callaghan Mystery
Book #: Three
Written: Gregory Ashe and C.S. Poe
Cover art: Reese Dante
Release date: Tuesday, November 26, 2024

If you're new to Sam Auden and Rufus O'Callaghan, this is my co-written series with fellow mystery author and wonderful friend, Gregory Ashe. We released the first book in 2020—A Friend in the Dark—and have been slowly but surely continuing to get Sam and Rufus in love and in trouble. Maybe the coolest part of these books is the way in which we write them. No passing chapters back and forth via email or trying to share the dialogue of lead characters. We, quite literally, sit in a Google document together, for two hours at a time, and write. One page might be two paragraphs by Greg, one sentence by Poe, another sentence by Greg, so on and so forth. Every page is a melting pot of the two of us. I think this process allows for our very distinct styles to blend together and create a wholly unique narrative, while at the same time, not allowing readers to forget who we each are as authors, as I believe we can be readily seen in Sam (Greg) and Rufus (Poe).

Stay tuned for the reveal of the official blurb and pre-order links, coming very soon! And don't forget to add the book to your Goodreads shelf today.

Translation: Il mistero delle immagini in movimento

The Italian edition of The Mystery of the Moving Image is now available through Triskell Edizioni and entitled, Il mistero delle immagini in movimento!

Translation: Omicidi al Madison Square Park

The Italian edition of Madison Square Murders is now available through Quixote Edizioni and entitled, Omicidi al Madison Square Park!

Sale: Madison Square Murders .99c

Madison Square Murders (Memento Mori: Book One) is on sale—August 16 only—for .99c at all retailers, including international! You can also take advantage of the sale by grabbing the audio, narrated by the talented Kale Williams, for the Whispersync price of $7.49.

Blurb: Everett Larkin works for the Cold Case Squad: an elite—if understaffed and overworked—group of detectives who solve the forgotten deaths of New York City. Larkin is different from others, but his deduction skills are unmatched and his memory for minute details is unparalleled.

So when a spring thunderstorm uproots a tree in Madison Square Park, unearthing a crate with human remains inside, the best Cold Case detective is assigned the job. And when a death mask, like those prominent during the Victorian era, is found with the body, Larkin requests assistance from the Forensic Artists Unit and receives it in the form of Detective Ira Doyle, his polar opposite in every way.

Factual reasoning and facial reconstruction puts Larkin and Doyle on a trail of old homicide cases and a murderer obsessed with casting his victims’ likeness in death. Include some unapologetic flirting from Doyle, and this case just may end up killing Everett Larkin.

Status Update: Hudson River Homicides

I’ve cancelled both of the 2024 pre-orders (Magic & Steam 4 and Memento Mori 4) with the simple reason being: the looming deadlines for submitting pre-orders weren’t conducive to producing the quality writing my readers know and have come to expect.

I’ve been recovering from creative burnout for the last year, which led me to trashing the original (and half finished) manuscripts to both books mentioned above because they weren’t up to my storytelling standards. Unfortunately, those decisions put me behind schedule, and Amazon only allows authors to extend their pre-order once by an additional thirty days—which is rarely helpful. The only call to make, tough as it might be, was to cancel these pre-orders and finish writing the books at my own pace.

I love Larkin and Doyle (as well as Gillian and Gunner) so much, and writing these stories brings me such joy. I don’t want to lose what makes writing special in a mad dash to reach the finish line, and I don’t think readers would like those books either. I know this is disappointing, but I promise I’m hard at work on Hudson River Homicides and our favorite cold case detective and forensic artist aren’t going anywhere!

I’m going to avoid assigning a specific release date until I’ve finished writing the book. (It will be 2024!) But once Hudson River Homicides goes into edits, the schedule becomes surefire, so I’ll be able to share the date publicly! And when Book 4 releases, yes, Kale Williams will return to narrate the audiobook too.

I really appreciate your support of my writing and the excitement you share with me for Larkin and Doyle. I can’t tell you how incredible it is, how happy I am that these two unconventional heroes have found so much acceptance with readers.

Below is the official blurb for Hudson River Homicides, as well as a little excerpt for your reading pleasure! Thank you again, my friends, and I promise to keep you updated via newsletter and my social media channels.

-

Blurb: The Cold Case Squad has a problem: someone won’t stop taunting Detective Everett Larkin. He’s been able to apprehend some of the worst criminals to ever stalk the streets of New York City, thanks in great part to forensic artist and boyfriend, Ira Doyle, but after their last case, events have taken a turn for the worse.

A body recovered from the Hudson River bears a message addressed to Larkin, as well as another token from Victorian mourning culture. And as nineteenth century hair jewelry leads Larkin deeper into the growing tangle of interconnected crimes, it becomes evident that solving these mysteries will come at a profound cost. To be a good detective, Larkin will have to put his relationship on the line by revisiting the past and enduring sleepless nights—lest the sender act on their threat against Doyle.

What began as a game of cat and mouse has turned into a fight for love and life itself.

-

Excerpt: Doyle wore a light gray suit that morning—a color he didn’t typically favor, but in Larkin’s professional opinion, it really complimented his physical blessings—paired with a powder blue button down, sleeves rolled back of course, and a navy tie with the knot just the slightest bit askew.
In other words: Ira Doyle was perfect.
Doyle smiled, big and bright, like he only had eyes for Larkin. The strap of his portfolio bag crossed his chest from left to right and he held two of the same coffee cups and sandwiches as Porter—sans bacon, Larkin guessed.
Porter tilted his head sideways in reference to Doyle while saying, “Look who I bumped into at the food cart downstairs.”
Doyle said to Larkin, “I figured you’d probably be jonesing for some calories about now.”
“He’s a real peach, Grim,” Porter interjected.
“Thank you, Porter,” Larkin answered, holding the phone to his chest.
“I’m just saying—my ex-wife was never so thoughtful.” Porter set his breakfast on his messy desktop. He tossed his coat over the back of his chair and pocketed the handkerchief before adding, “Come to think of it, I don’t recall your husband ever coming ‘round with coffee, either.”
“Ex-husband,” Larkin corrected. “Because he was expected to be at his job.” And as Doyle approached Larkin’s desk, he said, more quietly to his partner, “You have a job too.”
“It’s still early,” Doyle insisted, voice dropping to match Larkin’s tone. He stood close enough that Larkin had to tilt his head back, but not so close that their intimacy was on public display. “How’re you?”
“I suppose making a spectacle over subpar hold music has given me away.”
“A bit.”
“I’m happy to see you.”
Doyle’s sympathetic smile bloomed like a recording of a time-lapsed flower on fast forward. “Yeah?”
“I’m always happy to see you.” Larkin heard the jazz music cut and he promptly raised the receiver to his ear.

9 Year Publishing Anniversary

It's that time again—my many reasons to celebrate with whiskey and cupcakes! June holds a lot of joy for me. It's Pride month, it's my birthday month (37 this year!), but it's also my publishing anniversary month.

Nine years ago on June 1st, my very first professionally published short story debuted in a summer anthology. Love Has No Expiration has been out-of-print since my rights reverted in 2020 and I opened up shop as Emporium Press, but I promise that delightful little contemporary romance will get the princess treatment soon enough—an all-new cover, entirely re-written and expanded content, with fresh edits—and be available for sale once again.

Readers took a chance on a fresh-faced no-name, and the success of that one short story made the Snow & Winter series possible. Readers continued to take chances on content publishers and agents alike insisted had no audience, allowing me to publish my passion-project: Magic & Steam. And when I introduced an unreliable narrator named Everett Larkin, readers gave him a chance, making the Memento Mori series some of my most successful books to-date.

Your support, whether you've been reading me since 2015 or just began yesterday, has helped make all of these books possible. Your support allows me to write full-time, to keep coming up with bigger and better stories, and even allows me to tell the government: yes, this is my actual job! But most importantly, your support allows me the opportunity to hire other artists in the industry—which in these uncertain times of AI technology scraping and stealing data—can make all the difference.

2015 - 2024

5 short stories
5 novellas
12 novels
2 co-written novels
18 audiobooks
12 French translations (+8 contracts)
3 German translations (+2 contracts)
2 Italian translations (+16 contracts)

And I've got plenty more happening behind-the-scenes! Books being written (hello, Hudson River Homicides), audio productions penciled onto calendars, special collections in planning stages, and three confirmed events in the upcoming year, including: GRL '24 in Olathe, Kansas and Coastal Magic Convention '25 in Daytona Beach, Florida! (The third is still under wraps, per the organizer.)

Thank you so much for taking a chance on me, for trusting in my storytelling abilities, and supporting indie LGBT authors! Here's to many more years of reading together.

Reads: March, 2024

I was all over the place with research books in March, so unfortunately I only had time to write one review. That being said, it's a fantastic read!

18 Tiny Deaths: The Untold Story of Frances Glessner Lee and the Invention of Modern Forensics by Bruce Goldfarb

My reviews are always posted at both Goodreads and BookBub—please give a follow!

Movies: March, 2024

I'm starting a new monthly roundup! Along with my book reviews, I'll now be sharing movie reviews posted at Letterboxd—basically the Goodreads of the movie world. For those who might not know, I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors in film production. But like so many often do after attending art school, I burned out on my interest and passion in movie making. I promised myself that 2024 would be about rediscovering that joy and watching the types of films I love—to heck with the opinions of former professors!

Art is subjective. Remember that.

So if you'd like movie recommendations, or have interest in reading breakdowns that study styles and processes, check out my March views:

The Wind Phone (2019) by Kristen Gerweck

Love Lies Bleeding (2024) by Rose Glass

The Untouchables (1987) by Brian De Palma

You're welcome to make an account (it's free!) and follow me on Letterboxd!

Translation: Il mistero delle curiosità

The Italian release of The Mystery of the Curiosities (Snow & Winter: Book Two) is now available and entitled, Il mistero delle curiosità!

Release: Curio

Today is the pseudo-surprise release of my newest short story: Curio! A gay romcom palate cleanser perfect to read in between larger books, with lots of laughs and low angst to put a smile on your face.

Blurb: Llewellyn Cooper and his aunt Julia run Curio Cabinet in New York City’s West Village, where the clientele is as strange as the junk being amassed in their secondhand shop. Llewellyn and Julia have been as thick as thieves his entire life, and Llewellyn can’t imagine being anywhere else six days a week—even if Julia’s bizarre habits and inappropriate conversations drive him crazy. That’s family, though, right?

When Llewellyn drums up the nerve to chat with a routine customer—in part due to curiosity, as Henry McLaughlin returns time and again to purchase nothing but old photographs, but also because the bearded and bow tie–wearing man is the finest thing to ever step foot inside Curio—it seems like Llewellyn will finally have a plus-one for future RSVPs. But just when things start looking up in the romance department, it turns out Henry might be too strange for the Cooper family.

Reads: January, 2024

January has been great in the reading department! I'm one of those readers who, once I begin a book, even if it's not for me, I read in its entirety. But I decided this month that a research book—riddled with historical inconsistencies, errors, and general lack of citations—wasn't worth my time. So instead, I enjoyed some new titles, reviewed some old, and it was a joy!

Grave Danger (Critter Catchers: Level Up: Book One) by Hank Edwards

Gentleman Bandit: The True Story of Black Bart, the Old West's Most Infamous Stagecoach Robber by John Boessenecker

Impeccable Credentials (Town Bronze: Book Three) by Ellie Thomas

As always, I post my reviews at both Goodreads and BookBub and always welcome new followers!

Winner: Goodreads M/M Romance Members' Choice Awards 2023

Thank you to readers for your incredible support during the annual Goodreads M/M Romance Members' Choice Awards in December, 2023! Because of you, the Memento Mori series got some incredible recognition:

Best Mystery/Whodunit
2nd place, Broadway Butchery

Best Law Enforcement
2nd place, Broadway Butchery

Best Main Character in a Series
2nd place, Everett Larkin

I'm especially humbled by your choosing of Everett Larkin as one of the best leading characters of all 2023 releases, and can honestly say I was speechless when the winners were announced! Thank you so much for reading this series. Memento Mori is so near and dear to my heart, and knowing these books are resonating with others is the greatest gift I could ever receive.

Status Update: The Councilman

I've been creatively burned out since mid-2022, which if you hadn’t seen me mention on various social media platforms, or heard me talk about in-person at book events, you might have simply noticed a decline in my production—from a cornucopia in 2021 to two books in 2022 to only one in 2023. While I feel like I’ve finally broken free of that rut, am writing consistently again, and at a level of quality I feel to be on par with previously published titles, it’s been slow-going. Writing is like a sport in that sense, and after sitting on the sidelines for so long, my muscles and stamina aren’t what they used to be. It’ll take some time for me to get back to a pre-burnout pace.

I’m sharing this backstory to explain why, if you had The Councilman (Magic & Steam 4) pre-ordered, you probably got a notification from the retailer that the pre-order has been cancelled and the book is not currently being released in January.

The reason is simple: I couldn’t get it written in time. Either the story would have suffered or the editing would have been subpar. I am very proud of providing readers with nothing short of my absolute best, and to have cut corners to meet a retailer due date wouldn’t have sat well with me or you.

But let me reiterate: The Councilman is still being written! It will still be published!

The book is halfway done, the cover art is, of course, complete, and there’s a working blurb. I’m not going to estimate an exact release date right now, but will keep readers informed through social media, my website, and newsletter. And when The Councilman is done, you’ll hear me shouting from the rooftops, I promise.

Thank you so much for your support of the Magic & Steam series, and thank you for supporting my writing. Whether you’ve only recently begun reading me, or have been around since my 2015 short story debut, this career would not be possible without your love of books and commitment toward stories representing LGBTQ people in a positive light.

Gillian and Gunner are returning in 2024! Declan Winters is returning for the audiobook production!

Just give me a bit more time to really nail that story into place.
